What Is TikTok?

The consolidated suit included more than 20 separate cases filed against TikTok over the platform’s collection and sharing of the personal and biometric information without user consent. Specifically, this involved the use of facial filter technology for special effects. Trump’s lawsuit claims his First Amendment rights are being violated. The First Amendment applies to government censorship, not actions taken by businesses, however. Trump likely knows this but wanted to stir up some headlines.

Right-to-repair laws have sprung up, which could give new life to aging electronics. Finding ways to cut down on the number of new devices going into circulation every year won’t just reduce the amount of landfill space going to e-waste. It could also be a major climate boon; an estimated 68% of electronic devices’ carbon emissions are tied to the manufacturing process. Want your finger on the pulse of everything that’s happening in tech? TikTok has dethroned Google as the most popular domain in 2021, according to Cloudflare’s 2021 Year in Review for internet traffic.

TikTok Marketing Tip #7: Be The First

Despite its success, U.S. government officials have expressed concerns in the past over the amount of data that TikTok collects. This is all particularly concerning for the U.S. government since TikTok is a Chinese company. In 2019, the U.S. military banned its personnelfrom using the app on government-issued phones and devices. TikTok is not the first Chinese social media platform to go international, although it is likely the first to gain traction with non-Chinese users globally.

  • Don’t skimp on quality, but if you push yourself to consistently push out videos, not only will your videos probably get better, but you’ll be more likely to have one of them go viral on TikTok.
  • You can change the size of your image or GIF by choosing a default dimension under Output Size on the right side of the Studio.
  • Hold your finger down on the app and either tap Uninstall on Android or tap the X button on iPhone.
  • Most young people spend at least a few minutes a day on one of these sites.

The TikTok algorithm usually does a good job of selecting a video you will enjoy, based on your past viewing history. Because each clip is very short, you are unlikely to be bored by the videos, and if you don’t like one, you can easily flick onto the next one. Some people claim that the act of flicking through videos resembles a slot machine, and you’re continually “betting” on what will turn up next. These celebrities not only post content on TikTok but also promote TikTok on other social media channels.

You don’t have access to downloaded media files either. Instagram and Facebook users have experienced multiple breaches of their data, and third-party developers have been found to scrape user data for their own purposes on several occasions. TikTok also requests a number of permissions on your device, says Sherrod DeGrippo, vice president of threat research and detection at security company Proofpoint. Facebook isn’t the only company hungry for data on what consumers are doing on their phones. Google used Apple’s enterprise program to distribute an app called Screenwise Meter, which also acts like a VPN.

The company has an active role in “disseminating the party-state’s propaganda on Xinjiang”, the report reads. And there are concerns over TikTok’s code, with experts worrying that it could allow privacy and security breaches. TikTok patched several major flaws, including one found in January 2020 that would allow an attacker to control someone else’s account, upload unauthorized videos, make private videos public and delete existing videos.

On 23 September 2020, TikTok filed a request for a preliminary injunction to prevent the app from being banned by the Trump administration. U.S. judge Carl J. Nichols temporarily blocked the Trump administration order that would effectively ban TikTok from being downloaded in U.S. app stores starting midnight on 27 September 2020. Nichols allowed the app to remain available in the U.S. app stores, but declined to block the additional Commerce Department restrictions that could have a larger impact on TikTok’s operations in the U.S. These restrictions were set to take place 12 November 2020. On 14 August 2020, Trump issued another order giving ByteDance 90 days to sell or spin off its U.S. As of 2021, there is still the fear that TikTok is not protecting the privacy of its users and may be giving their data away.
